Moyes wants more England caps for Jagielka

7 May 2013 18:39

Everton boss David Moyes has heaped praise on Phil Jagielka and urged England manager Roy Hodgson to pick him more often.

Jagielka has made 30 or more Premier League appearances in five of his six seasons at Everton and his consistency at the back has been a key reason in the club's comparative success.

The 30-year-old defender has made 16 appearances for England but should be a regular according to Moyes, particularly after the retirement of John Terry.

"When you look at the situation with England at the moment, it's there for Jags to go and say 'pick me'," Moyes said.

"He was top drawer at Anfield and has been like that for a long time. He sometimes doesn't believe in himself enough or have the confidence he should have when you see how he plays.

"But as a manager, he gives you everything. He's been absolutely superb for us – he can be a real leader and always gives everything in every game he plays in."

Jagielka was Everton's captain against Liverpool on Sunday, with the injured Phil Neville on the sidelines.

The former Sheffield United centre-back will assume total control of the role next season as Neville leaves the club.

"He'll get better with responsibility over time, and we hope he'll be a great captain," Moyes added.
