Bale: Southampton win is massive

6 May 2013 11:04

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has described his side's win over Southampton on Saturday as "massive" in the battle for a top-four finish.

The 23-year-old struck a late winner against his boyhood club to move Spurs within two points of fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game less than their rivals.

After the game, Bale expressed delight at having earned three points in order to prolong Tottenham's bid for UEFA Champions League qualification.

"It was a tough game," he said. "They played well in the first half especially and made it difficult for us.

"The team worked so hard and as I said, I was lucky enough to get the winner. It’s a massive win and keeps our hopes alive."

The Wales international also hailed Southampton's performance, even putting his long-distance strike down to good fortune.

"Southampton made it difficult, there wasn't a lot of space but I tried my luck on the right in the last 20 minutes and I was able to get some shots off," he said.

"Luckily enough, one of them went in."
