English League Two Wrap: Bradford & Northampton to contest play-off final

5 May 2013 22:37

Bradford City are through to the English League Two play-off final after a 5-4 aggregate victory over Burton Albion.

The League Cup finalists were 3-2 down after Thursday’s first leg but came out 3-1 winners to earn their first ever win at the Pirelli Stadium.

Nahki Wells put Bradford ahead in the 25th minute when he poked home following a sloppy Marcus Holness back-pass.

The visitors doubled their advantage shortly after half-time as Wells set up James Hanson to score from the edge of the Burton area.

However, the hosts levelled the tie at 4-4 thanks to a penalty from Jacques Maghoma, who was felled by Garry Thompson.

Wells went on to grab his second goal of the afternoon and his 25th this season as he spun his marker and flicked the ball past goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson from six yards out.

Bradford withstood some late Burton pressure and held on for the win, which will see them return to Wembley on May 18.

Phil Parkinson's side will go up against Northampton for a place in League One after they beat Cheltenham 1-0 at Whaddon Road.

Luke Guttridge hit a spectacular first-half volley to wrap-up a 2-0 aggregate victory and book their place in the Wembley final.

Northampton goalkeeper Lee Nicholls had earlier saved a Marlon Pack penalty after referee Andy Madley ruled Ben Tozer had fouled Russell Penn in the area, although replays suggested the offence occurred outside the box.

Roy O'Donovan, the goalscorer in the first-leg, had the first opportunity at goal but having got to Adebayo Akinfenwa's pass was unable to finish past Scott Brown.

But Guttridge's strike was enough to secure victory and the chance to secure a spot in English League One.

The final is schedule for Saturday 18 May at 13:30GMT.
