Hull City promoted to Premier League

4 May 2013 15:56

Hull City have clinched promotion to the Premier League after a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City at the KC Stadium on Saturday.

It marks a return to the top flight of English football for the Yorkshire side after two seasons in the Premier League between 2008 and 2010.

Ex-Hull striker Fraizer Campbell put champions Cardiff in the lead to silence the home crowd but they hit back with goals from Nick Proschwitz and Paul McShane.

Incredibly, Hull were given the chance to wrap up promotion with a last-minute penalty, but the German striker's effort was saved by David Marshall and Cardiff went up the other end, earning a spot-kick of their own after an Amdy Faye handball, which was converted by Nicky Maynard.

Watford could have overtaken Steve Bruce's side with a win, but they were beaten at home by Leeds, with Ross McCormack scoring in the dying moments at Vicarage Road.

Dominic Poleon had put the home side in front after a mix-up in the Watford defence but Almen Abdi equalised before half-time.

The North-London side pushed hard for a winner but were dealt a huge blow when 19-goal striker Troy Deeney was sent-off for a second bookable offence.

And McCormack consigned the home side to a play-off berth after debutant goalkeeper Jack Bonham got a hand on the striker's chip but it wasn't enough to keep it out.

At the other end of the table Wolves suffered relegation for the second season running after they were defeated 2-0 by Brighton.

Barnsley's 2-2 draw away to Huddersfield meant it would have been mathematically impossible to avoid relegation anyway and two first-half goals from Kazenga Lua-Lua sealed the Midlands club's fate.

Peterborough were the final team to go down after they suffered a 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Goals from Lee Tomlin and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing either side of a Glenn Murray penalty looked to have salvaged a last-day escape. But Kevin Phillips and Mile Jedinak struck late to end their two-year Championship stint.
