No split loyalties for Luiz

3 May 2013 16:42

David Luiz will have his eye on the prize when Chelsea take on his former club Benfica in the UEFA Europa League final.

Luiz, who switched allegiances from the Portuguese club in 2011, scored a stunning goal in the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge against Basel on Thursday to secure Chelsea's progress to the final, winning 5-2 on aggregate.

Benfica turned around a first-leg deficit against Fenerbahce on the same night, running out 3-1 winners at the Estadio da Luz after they had lost by a single goal in the first tie in Turkey.

Luiz is wary of the threat posed by his former team, but insisted he will give everything to his current employers to snatch victory in Amsterdam on May 15.

"So Benfica showed they are a big club, a big team," he said. "Everyone knows Benfica's in my heart but when I start the game I forget everything and try my best for Chelsea.

"It's always special when you can score and help the team. It's difficult to choose one. I wait for the next one."

Chelsea have already been beaten in the Club World Cup final this season, while they were dumped out of the FA Cup and League Cup at the semi-final stage.

Defensive duo Ryan Bertrand and Gary Cahill expressed their delight at reaching the final and both want to secure a second continental trophy in successive seasons after last term's UEFA Champions League triumph.

The left-back said: "We've had chances to get to a final on a few occasions this year, so it's good to finally do it in one. And it will be a great competition to get our hands on."

Cahill added: "So we're there. There's no point winning tonight if we don't go out and do the job in Amsterdam. Hopefully it will go like it did last year and we'll have strong end to the season."
