Levante to assist any match-fixing investigation

3 May 2013 12:50

Levante will co-operate with any investigation into allegations of match-fixing in their game against Deportivo La Coruna last month.

Deportivo, 17th in La Liga and nine points behind Levante in 13th, won the game 4-0 on April 13 and reports have suggested the fixture may be under suspicion.

In a statement, Levante officials backed their players and said they would assist any investigation that may take place.

"Following recent reports in the media about alleged irregularities in the league match of round 31, Levante-Deportivo La Coruna, the board of directors has decided the club will make itself available to all institutions that will be looking into these reports (Liga de Futbol Profesional and Asociacion de Futbolistas Espanoles) and also to the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol and, of course, the ordinary courts, to help and assist and collaborate with any investigation that is occurring," the statement read.

The club also called on its fans to stick with them amid the reports and rumours, saying it was vital for Levante's overall image in the game.

"Levante UD is an institution that ensures fair play and is fighting for full transparency in the competition," the statement continued.

"The board believes in the professionalism and integrity of all the players of the first team, who have been involved in major sporting achievements of our history.

"The club appeals to his fans and all Levantinismo to stick together, support the team and the organisation to strengthen its image and, above all, achieve the objective of staying in the Primera Division.

"The board of directors, in seeing out its responsibility, will take every appropriate action to defend the prestige of Levante UD."

Levante coach, Juan Ignacio Martinez, said: "I am not in people’s head. Juan Ignacio is always quiet clever and Juan Ignacio normally answers everything but (Levante player Jose Javier) Barkero has already talked.

"Juanfran talked yesterday too and the president also spoke to you, so I think I don’t have to talk anymore about this issue.

"This is truth and I can not deny. My father, who is more than 80 year old, called me yesterday night. The impact is real but I think the president spoke to you yesterday cleverly and now we have to put everything on the pitch and I have to do the right decision onwards."
