Hughton enjoying battle for survival

3 May 2013 18:11

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton says he has been motivated by the challenge of keeping the club in the Premier League.

Hughton is only three matches away from completing his first season in charge at the club, with Norwich still not safe from relegation.

They are six points above the 18th-placed Wigan, who have a game in hand, but can practically secure their survival with victory against Aston Villa at Carrow Road on Saturday.

"It's always a tough job, but you do the job because of the challenges," Hughton said.

"We can speak about the challenge now - the challenge of going into these last three games trying to get the results that we need. They're there throughout the season.

"You do this job because of them, and you never shy away from them, but you also do the job because you have a confidence in what you're doing. We need to take that confidence into these last three games."

Villa were superb in a 6-1 mauling of Sunderland on Monday, a match which saw Belgian Christian Benteke net a second-half hat-trick.

The result lifted Villa away from immediate relegation danger and Hughton knows that Paul Lambert's side will enter the match in good form.

But he said that will not affect his club's preparation for the match and that they will be focused on what they can do right ahead of Saturday's crucial clash.

"They're on the back of a very good performance, but I think what we have to concentrate very much on is ourselves and what we're prepared to put in to try and win the football match," he noted.

"We approach every single game the same, in the sense that we want to win every game, but we're playing in a difficult league with top players playing at top clubs.

"It's about concentrating on our strengths - we are at home and we'll have a fabulous crowd behind us, as they were in the Reading game. We have to very much look at the positives."
