UEFA Champions league: Barcelona 0 Bayern Munich 3 (agg 0-7)

1 May 2013 22:32

Bayern Munich will face Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final after rounding off a 7-0 aggregate win over Barcelona.

The Bundesliga champions were already four goals to the good after the first tie at the Allianz Arena and their progression was made even sweeter by Arjen Robben's eye-catching strike, a Gerard Pique own-goal and Thomas Muller's header.

Lionel Messi was only fit enough to make the bench for the hosts, while Dante missed out for the Germans, but they were boosted by the return of Mario Mandzukic in attack.

Despite Barca's desperate need to score, it was the visitors who made the strongest start. Dani Alves and Victor Valdes were lucky not to be punished for an apparent back-pass as Bayern piled early pressure on the hosts.

Gerard Pique was twice called into action and did well to get to Robben and tackle the Dutchman after he had sprung the offside trap to latch onto Bastian Schweinsteiger's ball over the top.

And the centre-back was forced into an even more impressive block just moments later. The Dutch winger found Schweinsteiger on the right-hand side of the penalty area, who back-heeled the ball to Philipp Lahm, but with the goal gaping for Bayern's captain, Pique launched into a fantastic tackle to deny him.

Barcelona finally found their feet and, after Pedro's long-ranger was tipped over by Manuel Neuer, Xavi wasted a glorious opportunity, blazing a left-footed effort over from 10 yards after Cesc Fabregas' touch had landed at his feet.

If it had not been already, the tie was killed off three minutes into the second half as Robben picked the ball up on the right flank and cut inside Adriano before curling a sumptuous effort beyond Valdes into the far corner.

The Dutchman had another great chance soon after as Franck Ribery zipped down the left flank and swept a ball across goal that Robben could only side-foot wide of goal.

With Barca's fight losing steam, Xavi and Andres Iniesta were withdrawn, perhaps to rest them for the hosts' league campaign, and replaced by Alexis Sanchez and Thiago Alcantara respectively.

The visitors settled into a comfortable rhythm, knocking neat passes across the pitch as the travelling support cheered "Ole" to the chagrin of Barca's fans, who whistled loudly while the Germans were in possession.

Things got worse for Barcelona as Luiz Gustavo slipped the ball inside Alves to Ribery, whose flashed ball across the box was turned into his own net by Pique.

It was soon three on the night and seven on aggregate as Ribery outpaced Alex Song on the left before looping a cross to Muller, who nodded past the hapless Valdes.

Bayern will take on Dortmund in the final, who they have already beaten twice this season. The two sides will also play out a dress rehearsal for the Wembley clash in the Bundesliga this weekend.
