Pulis: Begovic is the best in the Premier League

1 May 2013 16:54

Stoke boss Tony Pulis believes Asmir Begovic has been the standout goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.

The Bosnia & Herzegovina international has helped Stoke keep 12 clean sheets so far this term, a figure only bettered by heavyweights Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

And Pulis has hailed the 25-year-old after David de Gea was preferred between the sticks in the PFA's team of the year.

"I think he has been consistently the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season," he said.
"He's been different class for us. I think the experience he's got from playing games regularly has been the biggest factor.

"Asmir has had a full run at the team this season and grown in stature because of it.

"There is no substitute for playing games and that's why I would always encourage youngsters at this football club to go out and play league football to gain experience."

Pulis went on to insist his squad must not relax having reached the 40-point mark over the weekend, but praised their refusal to crumble under the threat of relegation.

"We have to make sure we keep winning and keep picking up points," he added. "We've got 40 points, which is the benchmark, but that doesn't mean we stop trying to get points. The season is far from over.

"I'm just pleased the lads kept their nerve the way they did. While people around were panicking and the newspapers were predicting the end of the world, the players were holding their nerve and getting the results we needed."
