Arnold: We don´t fear Wanderers

30 March 2013 13:46

Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold is confident his side knows enough about Western Sydney to topple them in the A-League finals.

Arnold admitted he did not watch the Wanderers 3-0 triumph over Sydney FC on Friday, a victory that gave the fledgling club the Premiers' Plate in their maiden campaign.

Speaking after his side's 2-1 win over Melbourne Heart on Saturday, Arnold revealed he did not bother to watch the Wanderers' historic win.

"I was watching the NRL (rugby league)," he said.

"We can't control what they did last night.

"I think we showed enough when we played them here last time.

"We killed them and we should have won the game.

"We are confident in our own ability after 27 rounds, we are not going to start doing any new tricks so we know exactly what they are about.

"They are a very fit side. We know if we are on form on our day we can beat them."

Reflecting on a third consecutive season finishing in the top two, an A-League record, the ex-Socceroos boss was enthusiastic.

"If you look at the statistics we are a better side then what we were last year. We got 54 points, last year we had 51 when we won it," he said.

"We scored more goals this year (48) than last year, we conceded less goals (22) than last year. We lost the least amount of games in the league this year (five)."

An upbeat Arnold had a thinly-veiled dig at the overseas concessions the Wanderers were granted in their debut year.

"We are developing Australian youngsters, we aren't just going out and playing foreigners," he said.

"It took a side that got 34 points out of 36 to beat us over the line, but that's life.

The Mariners now meet Chinese side Guizhou Renhe in back-to-back Asian Champions League fixtures before they host their first match in the A-League final series on April 14.
