Survival Agbonlahor´s sole focus

25 March 2013 15:03

Gabriel Agbonlahor insists he is more concerned with Aston Villa's Premier League survival than breaking Dwight Yorke's goalscoring record.

Agbonlahor's header against QPR nine days ago took the 26-year-old to his 59th top flight goal in Villa colours.

But when asked about the club record, Agbonlahor joked with reporters: "How many do I need? How many games are left? I think I will need to start taking penalties.

"It would be nice to break the record but the only thing on my mind is keeping the club up. If the record comes, it comes."

Having joined Villa at the age of 13, Agbonlahor has been at the club for over half of his life and is the club's longest serving player.

Despite moving to the brink of breaking the Villans' goalscoring record, Agbonlahor admits there is less pressure on him nowadays to score.

"I still get a massive thrill when I get a goal," he said. "As an attacking player you feel you are doing your part by scoring.

"But we have other players who can score goals like Christian Benteke and (Andreas) Weimann and that has been a help.

"When you are playing as a winger the pressure is not on you to score as much as when you are playing as a lone striker. As long as I'm getting a few I'm happy."

Agbonlahor is contracted to Villa Park until 2015 but says he has never expressed a desire to leave, and would extend his stay if offered.

"All that has ever been on my mind is getting in the side for the next game," he added.

"In football you never know what's going to happen. It's been a crazy journey and the time has flown by, but I've enjoyed every single bit of it.

"Long may it continue. I'm lucky to have been at a club like this for so long.

"I enjoy my football and I'm in the side. As long as that continues I would always want to stay. I've been with Villa since I was 13 and to still be here is a massive thing."
