Ramsey sorry for red card

23 March 2013 08:32

Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey admitted he was disappointed with himself after being sent off in their World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.

The Arsenal playmaker had helped Chris Coleman's side come from a goal down at half-time by smashing a penalty home after Robert Snodgrass brought down Chris Gunter, before Hal Robson-Kanu claimed the winner.

"It was very disappointing, it's something that I need to learn from; I should have looked up at the clock and let the keeper take the free-kick," the 22-year-old told reporters.

He added: "It was disappointing to do what I've done after a great performance, personally and as a team."

After being shown the red card by referee Anthony Gautier, Ramsey said he spoke to Coleman on the way off.

"I said sorry for letting the boys down and missing the next game," Ramsey said.

On fellow North London star Gareth Bale, Ramsey said of his half-time departure: "He's been suffering all week with a virus and obviously he didn't feel too clever."

Ramsey admitted that he wasn't surprised by some of the challenges that went in during the game.

"There is always (that kind of edge) in these sort of games against the home nations and this was no different," he said.

"There was a few tackles that were going, that maybe on another day would have had a different outcome from a different referee, but we're always expecting that against the likes of Scotland."

The victory sees Wales move into third place and the midfielder believes that can spur them on.

"We were coming into this game believing that we could win and we did, so hopefully now we can get a bit of momentum going," he said.

"We've done well in the last couple of games and hopefully we can carry on against Croatia."
