Reading can win relegation battle, says Shorey

18 March 2013 12:23

Nicky Shorey believes relegation-threatened Reading proved they can survive the drop after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney's deflected strike in the first half was enough to see off the Royals in what was their first game following the sacking of manager Brian McDermott, but wins for Wigan and Aston Villa have seen the club slip seven points adrift of safety.

"It's always tough coming to Old Trafford but I think we gave a good account of ourselves,” he told reporters.

"We looked a lot more solid. We felt quite comfortable and we knocked it about a bit and controlled the game at times."

Shorey was reinstated at left-back in place of Ian Harte by caretaker manager Eamonn Dolan and the 32-year-old is hoping he can make the position his own again, but admits he was disappointed at the departure of McDermott.

"I got the chance and hopefully I can stay in there," he added.

"(But McDermott’s exit was) a massive disappointment.

"I've known Brian for a long time and what he has done has been amazing. I wasn't playing at the end of his reign, but I still had that massive respect for him.

"It's not down to me, but I've enjoyed working with Eamonn.

"Whatever the decision the owner makes will be fine with us and we will get on with it. We had a good week with Eamonn and we'll work for him for however long it will be."
