MLS wrap: Earthquakes shake Red Bulls, Union win

11 March 2013 06:21

The San Jose Earthquakes downed the New York Red Bulls in MLS action on Sunday, while Chivas USA also won.

At Buck Shaw Stadium in California, Eric Alexander gave the Red Bulls the lead in the 17th minute and the score remained 1-0 to the visitors deep into the second half.

But rookie forward Adam Jahn popped up in the 83rd minute to level proceedings and Chris Wondolowski converted a penalty in stoppage time to guide the Earthquakes to a 2-1 victory.

The victory was San Jose's first of the season, while the Red Bulls remain winless and second bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, in front of 6801 fans at the Home Depot Center, Chivas USA came from behind to register a 3-1 triumph over FC Dallas.

After a dreary opening 45 minutes, David Arturo Ferreira put FC Dallas ahead just prior to the hour mark, only for Juan Agudelo to equalise for the home side 11 minutes later.

Tilson Minda then put Chivas USA ahead 14 minutes from time, before Giovanny Casillas sealed the result with a goal in stoppage time.

Chivas USA and FC Dallas sit in fourth and fifth place respectively in the Western Conference, with three points through two matches.

And finally, Philadelphia Union earned a hard fought 2-1 victory on the road against the Colorado Rapids.

Amobi Okugo gave Union the lead in the first half, but Jamie Smith equalised for Colorado with 22 minutes remaining in the contest.

Jack McInerney struck past Matt Pickens and into the back of the net in the 79th minute to ensure the Rapids lost their first home opener in 10 years.

The Rapids are rooted the bottom of the Western Conference table without a point, while the Union move up to seventh in the East with the three points.
