MLS wrap: Toronto break long drought

10 March 2013 06:48

A first-half brace from Wales international Robert Earnshaw earned Toronto FC their first win in the MLS since last July on Saturday.

The former West Brom striker enjoyed a dominant first half as Toronto stunned Sporting Kansas City 2-1 at the Rogers Centre.

Earnshaw bagged his first when he pounced on a Matt Besler mistake to score just three minutes in and completed his double 15 minutes later.

Sporting fought back in the second half through Cladio's Bieler's goal 10 minutes from time, but Toronto held on and celebrated as if they had won the championship.

The Vancouver Whitecaps made it two wins from two games to leap to the top of the Western Conference standings with a 2-1 victory over Columbus Crew.

Japan international Daigo Kobayashi struck Vancouver into a sixth-minute lead with his effort from distance before Jairo Arrieta hit back with the equaliser at the near post a minute after the interval.

Former Celtic and Rangers striker Kenny Miller slid the winner past Andy Gruenebaum nearing the hour mark after stripping a defender of the ball.

DC United took all three points against Real Salt Lake with Lionard Pajoy's poacher's finish sealing a 19th consecutive game at home without a loss.

Jerry Bengtson headed the winner on 65 minutes for the New England Revolution as they saw off the Chicago Fire 1-0 on the road.

Chicago's Sherjill MacDonald passed up the home side's best chance straight in front of goal in the 27th minute, leaving the Fire goalless and winless from their opening two games.

And the Montreal Impact posted their second win of the new season thanks to a 2-1 victory in Portland over the Timbers.
