Boos don´t bother Benitez

2 March 2013 22:11

Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has brushed off more criticism from his own club's fans following their 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

The Spaniard claimed in midweek that sections of the Blues support were creating an uncomfortable atmosphere at matches because of their opposition to his role as interim manager at the club.

However, following Saturday's win, Benitez instead highlighted the crowd's positive effect on the team despite a number of banners calling for his immediate removal.

When asked about the reaction of certain supporters, Benitez told reporters: "What you can see is the players playing with more confidence and the fans behind the team. Again I will not say too much about that, but it was really good and really positive.

"I'll say I'm really pleased with the fans who were behind the team. The players played with more confidence, it was clear and it was really positive.

"The team is doing well and I will continue to work very hard, that is the only way."

Benitez also hit out at owner Roman Abramovich for the 'massive mistake' in naming him as 'interim' manager, insisting it undermines his position.

But he underlined his determination to see out his current deal until the end of the season, adding: "I am contracted to the end of the season, that is the only thing. The way I approach my job is to be ready for the next game."

West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke tipped Ben Foster to be in the mix for England international duties, after impressing in the loss.

Foster, who is expected to come out of retirement to be available for selection by Roy Hodgson, denied the all-star Chelsea cast on multiple occasions at Stamford Bridge, although his side could not get a result.

But former Chelsea man Clarke said Foster's efforts in London should have caught Hodgson's eye.

"Ben plays like that week in, week out," Clarke said.

"He has probably made Roy happy because he has made himself available for selection and it gives Roy a nice problem."
