Lavezzi: Pressure on Argentina for World Cup

29 June 2013 14:11

Ezequiel Lavezzi has conceded that Argentina are under pressure to succeed at next year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The South Americans are on the brink of qualification from the CONMEBOL section, needing just a win from one of their remaining three fixtures to reach the showpiece in Brazil.

The two-time winners last triumphed on global football's biggest stage in 1986, when Diego Maradona inspired them to success in Mexico, and Lavezzi is aware of the demand from the Argentinian public to see them lift the trophy again.

"The feeling, the responsibility we have is large, but that shouldn’t work against us," Lavezzi told The Green Soccer Journal.

"We are aware that we have a great sentiment, but we are also aware that Argentina, for some time, has not won anything, and that the people want that – and the Argentinian people are waiting.

"So we go out and play, with the mentality to approach it in the best way and give that joy to the people that have been waiting for that for some time now."

Lavezzi joined Paris Saint-Germain in a reported €30 million deal from Napoli a year ago and went on to secure the capital club's first Ligue 1 title in 19 years.

The 27-year-old is delighted with how he has settled into life in Paris and is determined to bring several more titles to the Parc des Princes.

He added: "It is change, a special challenge at a club with a very serious, interesting project, and being able to live in a city like Paris was another one of the keys.

"I am very happy to have made that decision and I hope to win things. I will not be satisfied until I have given titles to the fans."
