Casillas: Brazil clash is dream final

28 June 2013 12:47

Spain captain Iker Casillas believes their upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup final with Brazil is the game everyone wanted to see.

Vicente del Bosque's men booked their place in the showpiece with a penalty shoot-out win over Italy on Thursday.

They now face the hosts, who overcame Uruguay on Wednesday, and Casillas feels the clash is the one that all football fans were hoping to witness.

"Since we started to play we have noticed that the public were going with our rival and never with us," Casillas said.

"It is anecdotal because I am convinced that all football fans wanted a game as exciting as Brazil-Spain in the end."

Spain were unable to score in 120 minutes of play against Italy, whose tactical approach stymied their attack, and Casillas was quick to praise Cesare Prandelli's men for their efforts.

"I congratulate Italy on their approach, they were a tough opponent and could have been the finalist," he added.

"We had moments, most of which came from Jesus Navas. I am convinced that Brazil is going to play in another way."

Brazil have the advantage of an extra day's rest ahead of the final, but Casillas insists Spain will not be using that as an excuse should they fail to perform.

"We will end with one less day of rest and the strain of extra time but it will not be an excuse," Casillas continued.

Victory for Spain will see them complete the set of international trophies after capturing both the FIFA World Cup and successive UEFA European Championship crowns.

Casillas admitted that they have found it difficult to remain successful at the highest level, but credited the hunger within the squad as the main factor in their continuing dominance.

"It is not easy after five years of success to continue competing at this level," he explained. "The success is due to the hunger of the players and the coaches."
