Still work to do for Brazil, says Scolari

27 June 2013 03:14

Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says his team are 'not ready for the World Cup' despite reaching the Confederations Cup final.

Scolari's side defeated Uruguay 2-1 on Wednesday in their Confederations Cup semi-final and while the 64-year-old coach was not too impressed by Brazil's performance, he maintained next year's World Cup hosts were learning a lot in this year's warm-up event.

Brazil have won all four of their games at the Confederations Cup and will meet the winner of Spain and Italy in Sunday's final, which will be another good test for Scolari and his men.

"The team is maturing against the likes of Italy and Uruguay," Scolari said.

"Uruguay is completely different than every other match, this is not only a match, there is a big rivalry between two countries.

"There is rivalry and it makes you a little nervous, which is normal.

"We are not ready for the World Cup.

"We have to learn to play in these situations and improve to be in the most important competition, which is the World Cup, in the best condition."

Scolari has taken a squad with an average age of 26.22 years to the Confederations Cup and has been thrilled with how his younger players have adapted to competitive fixtures against the likes of Italy and Uruguay.

Against Uruguay, 20-year-old Bernard came off the bench and the Atletico Mineiro attacking midfielder made a strong case to Scolari to be included in future big games.

"This team is still young and they are improving all the time," Scolari said.

"Sometimes you have to use situations that would be seen as unacceptable for any coach in the world.

"I mean to use a 20-year-old player like Bernard in a match like today is a risk but it was good.

"We also need have patience with the boy.

"We need to know if he is what we are waiting for.

"I can say that he is a great player.

"He is very good and does not feel the pressure."
