Del Bosque warns against complacency

27 June 2013 06:52

Spain head coach Vicente Del Bosque has ruled out any complacency from his team ahead of their Confederations Cup semi-final against Italy.

The lead-up to Thursday's semi-final at Fortaleza has been dominated by stories focusing on Spain's 4-0 drubbing of Italy in the Euro 2012 decider just under a year ago, but Scolari has revealed he has been concentrating on another encounter between the two sides.

Italy held Spain to a 1-1 draw in the group stage of Euro 2012 with Antonio Di Natale giving the Italians the lead before Cesc Fabregas equalised for Del Bosque's team four minutes later.

Del Bosque revealed on Wednesday that he considered Italy the better side last year in Gdansk, labelling Emanuele Giaccherini 'fantastic' and arguing Spain will be ready for a tough contest in Fortaleza.

"We must be wary of Italy because we take as a reference point the game in Danzig a year ago, which we drew 1-1," Del Bosque said.

"Italy were superior to us in that game and many players had a fantastic performance, above all Emanuele Giaccherini."

Del Bosque also played down the loss of Mario Balotelli for Italy, arguing Italy coach Cesare Prandelli will have plenty of options to cover for the injured forward.

"It's true Mario Balotelli is an important loss for them but Italy won't make a drama out of it," Del Bosque said.

"They have other players capable of replacing him."

While Del Bosque refused to confirm whether or not Iker Casillas will start in goal in the Confederations Cup semi-final, the 62-year-old coach promised to play a lead striker, or 'number nine', against Italy.

Del Bosque received plenty of criticism during Euro 2012 for regularly starting without genuine strikers in Poland and Ukraine and playing what was considered a 4-6-0 formation in the final against Italy.

But Del Bosque argued that will not be the case on Thursday, although he maintained Fabregas is a 'number nine', despite having played midfield for most of his career.

"We are going to continue in the same way in this tournament (with playing a striker) but it is important to point out that Cesc Fabregas is also a 'nine'," Del Bosque said.

"Maybe not in the traditional sense but Fabregas has proven himself to be a goalscorer many times."
