Sigurdsson: Tottenham determined to start well

25 June 2013 18:26

Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has urged his team-mates to make a strong start to the 2013-14 Premier League campaign.

Andre Villas-Boas' side picked up just two points from their opening three league fixtures last season, a factor which contributed to them narrowly missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.

And the Iceland international is keen to avoid a similarly sluggish start next time around.

"We started slowly last season, drew a couple of games at home that we really should have won and that cost us," he said.

"We’re all determined to make a good start and pick up good points in the first few weeks."

Spurs take on newly promoted Crystal Palace away from home in their first fixture of the new league season, and Sigurdsson expects his side to be fully tested by Ian Holloway's men.

"It will be a difficult game, a London derby and Palace’s first match back in the Premier League," he added.

"We need to get off to a good start to the season, so it’s important we get the three points and go from there."

Sigurdsson made 32 top-flight appearances for Tottenham in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane, scoring three goals.
