San Siro could host 2016 Champions League final

25 June 2013 13:41

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has hinted that the 2016 UEFA Champions League final could be played at the San Siro.

The 68-year-old Italian has confirmed that the Serie A club are hopeful of hosting the prestigious event following plans to re-develop one of the most-iconic stadiums in sport and its surrounding areas.

"We are very hopeful of holding the final of the Champions League in 2016, the metro line five will also arrive directly at the stadium," he told the club's official website.

"We are working towards making San Siro an elite stadium and to host a final you have to meet certain criteria.

"UEFA has whispered in our ears that they will give us the final in 2016 so we are hopeful."

The European Cup final was last played at the San Siro in 2001 when Bayern Munich beat Valencia on penalties.
