Fenerbahce handed European ban

25 June 2013 20:57

Turkish side Fenerbahce have been expelled from European competition by UEFA for two seasons over match-fixing charges.

The Istanbul club will not be able to participate in the 2013-14 UEFA CHampions League, which they had qualified for, with a third year's ban suspended for a probationary period of five years.

Rivals Besiktas have also been expelled from next season's UEFA Europa League.

The charges surrounding the two clubs relate to domestic games in Turkey in 2011 which were alleged to have been fixed.

The decision marks the second time that Fenerbahce have been banned from the Champions League, after they were expelled from the 2011-12 campaign on similar charges.

Five Fenerbahce officials have also been investigated as part of the scandal, but information surrounding their fate has yet to emerge.

Meanwhile, Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest, whose president Gigi Becali was recently jailed on corruption charges, have been handed a suspended one-year ban from European football, and are clear to compete in this season's Champions League.
