Tony Adams has said that Wayne Rooney would not be able to adapt to life in London should he sign for Arsenal or Chelsea in the off-season.
Rooney has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after he reportedly handed in a transfer request towards the end of last season.
The England international is supposedly set for talks with the United hierarchy this week to discuss his future, with Arsene Wenger said to be keen on a move for the 27-year-old.
Chelsea are also reported to hold an interest in Rooney, but Adams, who spent his entire career with Arsenal, does not believe that the former Everton man would be able to handle the spotlight of the capital.
"I'm not sure Wayne Rooney could handle London, to be completely honest. That would be a massive risk," Adams told TalkSPORT.
"I don't think it's a question of finances. I think it's his temperament and mentality. London is a different animal and it takes a different type of player.
"Wayne is unquestionably a super player and I'd love to see him at Arsenal. Technically he's fantastic but I'm not sure about him mentally, off the pitch, and his professionalism.
"I know Sir Alex Ferguson has dealt with Wayne brilliantly over the last few years and I'm sure Arsene Wenger could handle him, but I'm not sure. I wouldn't like to spend my money on Wayne."
Arsenal are also thought to be close to sealing a deal for Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain, but Adams was quick to air his concerns of the prospective transfer.
"My fear is that if Real don't want him, you are coming in under that," Adams added.
"If you want to compete with Real Madrid, you don't get their cast-offs. You need the best players in the league to win the league."
