Phillips reveals Palace negotiations

22 June 2013 14:11

Kevin Phillips has confirmed that he has been in negotiations with Crystal Palace over a new contract with the club.

Phillips, who scored the winning penalty in extra time in the Championship play-off final to book Palace's place in the Premier League, is poised to be a free agent when his contract expires.

The 39-year-old is eager to play on in professional football for at least one more season and revealed that he could spend that campaign with Palace in the top flight after entering into talks with the Selhurst Park outfit.

"We're in conversations with them (Palace)," he told Sky Sports News.

"The chairman has been on holiday and it's only really in the last few days that we've been in contact.

"I spoke to the gaffer (Ian Holloway) after the play-off final and he made it clear that he wanted me to stay."

Phillips enjoyed a prolific spell in the Premier League for Sunderland before going on to enjoy stints in the top flight with Aston Villa, Southampton, West Brom and Birmingham, and the veteran spoke of his desire to set a top-flight milestone in what is likely to be his final season.

"It's been an incredible career," he added.

"If I can sign for Palace and go out in the Premier League and go out the top like Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher have done, there are also a few other records I'd like to break. I'd like to become the oldest Premier League scorer."
