Chesterfield rave over Roberts signing

22 June 2013 17:15

Gary Roberts has been hailed as the Football League’s best left winger after joining Chesterfield on Saturday.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the League Two club following his release by Swindon after one season at the County Ground.

Roberts has amassed over 300 appearances during spells with clubs such as Huddersfield and Accrington, playing alongside Chesterfield manager Paul Cook at the latter.

Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner believes the signing of Roberts represents a coup for a club hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a play-off place last season.

Turner told the club’s official website: "Gary is a quality signing - I don't think there's anybody outside the Premiership who's better on the left wing.

"The left-hand side has been unbalanced for a long time and the addition of Gary will further strengthen the firepower as he creates and scores goals.

"Paul Cook has patiently waited for the deal to be done as he was very keen to bring Gary in. Chairman Dave Allen has provided some great support to ensure the conclusion of the deal."
