Red Star coach steps down

20 June 2013 00:09

Red Star Belgrade coach Ricardo Sa Pinto has resigned from his position after just three months in charge.

Sa Pinto's announcement came after he suggested that he had asked the board to make signings while he was on holiday, and they had failed to do so.

The debt-ridden club won the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) in 1991 but have struggled recently, going six years without winning a league title.

"I came here to win trophies but that is an impossible task in the present circumstances. I gave the board enough time to sort things out when I left to Portugal on vacation but they have failed to make enough progress, not least in boosting the squad," the Portuguese said.

"I have not shut the door for the future and I said that to the people in charge, but I also told them that Red Star furst have to win back some of the respect that enjoyed in Europe in 1991."

The side, who have fallen off the radar in Europe, have produced talent such as Manchester United stalwart Nemanja Vidic but since their debts grew to in excess of 50 million euros, they have experienced hardship.

This is set to continue with a number of players threatening to leave due to unpaid wages.
