Defiant Tabarez plans progression

20 June 2013 07:23

Despite losing to 'the best team in the world', Oscar Tabarez is confident Uruguay will beat Nigeria to advance in the Confederations Cup.

Tabarez, the head coach of Uruguay, said he expected his side to lose to Spain in their Confederations Cup opener last Sunday but believes it should not mean much in the long run if they overcome Nigeria.

Two wins will ensure Uruguay qualify for the final four of the Confederations Cup and with a game against lowly Tahiti to come after they face Nigeria in Bahia on Thursday, Tabarez reckons if his team can defeat the African champions, they will reach the semi-finals.

"We were chosen to start our Confederations Cup campaign against the best team in the world in Spain, we went out to play our game against them, we tried to do our best but we were largely overcome in the match," Tabarez said on Wednesday.

"We lost but I think it was a worthy effort by the players, so for me having lost to Spain does not change things for us and what we had expected before the match against Spain.

"I knew the second match of the series was going to be the most important for us, if we beat Nigeria we are more likely to move on to the semi-finals."

With Nigeria having defeated Tahiti 6-1 in their opening game of Confederations Cup Group B and Spain likely to wrap up a spot in the final four against the French Polynesians in the early game on Thursday, Uruguay must get at least a draw against the African side to keep their semi-finals hopes alive.
