Carragher: Liverpool must be decisive on Suarez

20 June 2013 10:02

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to act swiftly to sort out the future of striker Luis Suarez.

The Uruguay international has become disillusioned with life in England and expressed his desire to leave Anfield, citing the negative media reaction to his 10-match ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic as one of the major factors in his decision.

He has been strongly linked with a move to La Liga side Real Madrid, with reports on Thursday suggesting that Napoli may now also have entered the race for his signature.

Retired defender Carragher believes the club must make a swift decision on the forward, but insists they must get the full value for the player if they do decide to sell him.

"Liverpool can't just roll over and accept Luis Suarez will leave, but if he goes, they must get top dollar for him" Carragher said.

"If he was to be sold, it would be up to the club to make sure the money was spent in the right way, after maybe not doing that after (Fernando) Torres went.

"They have to be decisive. They either wait for a bid they think is acceptable or they decide to keep him because he is Liverpool's best player and they want to build a team around him.

"Whichever way, they need to act. If you lose a player late, it's very hard to replace him at that stage of the window."

Carragher believes that it is inevitable Suarez will be interested in a move to Spain, but feels that the situation will be different to when Torres left the Anfield club for Chelsea in January 2011.

"Luis is one of the best players in the world and, when Real Madrid come calling, it will obviously turn a players head," he added.

"It would be pretty naive to think no club would be interested in him. Madrid are probably the most famous club in the world football, and let's not forget, they took Cristiano Ronaldo from a Manchester United side that had just won the Champions League final.

"The thing about keeping unhappy players is an issue because we had that experience with Torres - and keeping him wasn't the right thing to do.

"I do believe Suarez is a slightly different character to Fernando Torres. There were times, I believe, Torres wasn't giving his best on the pitch for Liverpool and that is why it was a mistake to keep him. I don't think that will happen with Suarez, simply because of the player he is.

"But it's something you must be aware of."
