Del Bosque satisfied with Spain´s Cup opener

17 June 2013 03:07

Vicente del Bosque said Spain have put themselves in a great position to make the Confederations Cup semi-finals.

The World Cup and European champions were irrepressible as they controlled the game throughout against Uruguay, and following the 2-1 victory, Del Bosque said his side are well placed to continue their quest for a maiden title in the competition.

"They are three great points that place us in the best position to put us in the semi-finals," Del Bosque said.

Liverpool attacker Luis Suarez took some of the shine off of a brilliant display from the Spaniards with a sublime free-kick providing a consolation for the South Americans, but the 62-year-old insisted his team were deserved winners.

"(I am satisfied) not only by the performance of the first half, but also by the second. We played well, although everything was marred by the end.

"We grew very tired in the last minutes. It is normal with the high temperature that we suffer."

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez said Spain deserved the points, after restricting the influence the South Americans could have on the ball early.

"This was a match where Spain were the far better side and they fully deserved their win against us tonight," Tabarez said.

"They made things very difficult and created a lot of chances, especially in the first half, and were not able to get control of the ball.

"We improved in the second half though and managed to make the most of what was a very difficult situation for us as a team.

"The second half saw us play at a higher tempo and I think we rescued some pride with our performance.

"I feel that we were below our best performance tonight and that is something we will work on for the next matches."

Spain top Group B and take on Tahiti at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, while Uruguay go up against Nigeria in Bahia - both matches taking place on Thursday.
