Welbeck wants more goals

14 June 2013 09:57

Danny Welbeck is eager to increase his goal return after a season in which he scored just twice.

The Manchester United striker made 40 appearances for the Premier League champions but struggled to make an impact in front of goal.

Team-mate Robin van Persie showed Welbeck how it should be done, netting 30 goals in his debut season for the Old Trafford outfit.

And the England international, who insisted that he has become a better all-round player despite his lack of goals, wants to follow in the Dutchman's footsteps by upping his tally next term.

"Overall, there have been improvements to my game and I have been more consistent, but I've been playing on the wing, which has inhibited my ability to get into goalscoring positions," the 22-year-old said.

"I've played up front for England, been away to tournaments and scored goals there, so I know once I get into those positions I will put the chances away.

"I'm happy to help the team out and it doesn't really matter whether I'm playing on the wing or up front; I should have had a much better goal return."
