Rebelo expects Confederations Cup ´party´

14 June 2013 16:52

The FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil will be a "huge football party", the country's sports minister has said.

The competition begins on Saturday when the hosts take on Japan in Brasilia and Aldo Rebelo is expecting an entertaining tournament.

He is confident that Brazil will prove its worth as a host nation for the FIFA World Cup, with the Confederations Cup acting as a warm-up for the big one in 2014.

"After a huge effort on building new stadiums, preparing the security plan, boosting the telecommunication network, public transport, airports and so on, now we are up to deliver what our nation expects, and the rest of the world as well, during this very important tournament," Rebelo said.

"All delegation are here already - excluding Nigeria, which is on its way - and Brazil will deliver a huge football party."

The South American nation has come under scrutiny since being awarded the honour of hosting both the world's biggest football event and the 2016 Olympics.

There is still work to be done in order to ensure Brazil is ready to cope with the influx of media and fans that accompanies the World Cup.

It has not played host to the tournament since 1950 but no other nation can match Brazil's total of five titles.

The showpiece kicks off on June 12, 2014.
