Rakitic urges Sevilla to strengthen

12 June 2013 11:38

Ivan Rakitic has warned Sevilla that he will ask to leave if they do not strengthen their squad, with Liverpool already showing an interest.

The Croatian midfielder has already seen Jesus Navas leave to join Manchester City, and with Geoffrey Kondogbia and Alvaro Negredo also linked with moves away he has admitted concerns that the club will not progress to match his ambitions.

Rakitic made 34 appearances for La Liga outfit last season as they finished ninth in the table, and although they qualified for the UEFA Europa League after Malaga saw their ban appeal rejected, he has issued an ultimatum to ensure he remains at the club.

"I'll repeat what I said before - I will stay in Seville if the team strengthen the squad," he told Croatian newspaper 24sata.

"I have made it very clear and I know that they know they have to buy some good players."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has identified the 25-year-old as someone who could bolster his squad as he continues to develop his vision for success at Anfield.

Rakitic's experience in top-flight European football plus his international experience - he has 53 caps for Croatia - would improve the squad at Anfield, and he admitted that he would be interested in a move if Sevilla fail to meet his expectations.

"I am very flattered that I have been linked to a big club like Liverpool," he added.

"I have heard that something was going on, but for now there is no concrete offer. My brother is the one who takes care of my career,

he is negotiating over my future."
