Guardiola unfazed by Super Cup loss

28 July 2013 02:23

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has played down the significance of his side's DFL Super Cup loss to Borussia Dortmund.

Marco Reus netted a brace in Dortmund's 4-2 victory at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, with Bundesliga and European champions Bayern left to rue two costly mistakes.

Goalkeeper Tom Starke spilled a ball into the path of Reus for the opener while Daniel Van Buyten scored an own goal in the second half.

But Guardiola refused to blame the errors and said Bayern, who had Arjen Robben score twice, were at a similar level to Dortmund.

"They won. I am not here to analyse which team played better today. I am happy with our performance, we played well," he told reporters.

"Congratulations to Dortmund, they won. We did not lose because of that (the mistakes). This is football. We have one week until the cup and another week to the Bundesliga.

"They won 4-2, but I did not have the feeling they were much better than us. This is football. We will watch the match and work."

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm echoed his coach's thoughts, with the two teams expected to again be battling for the Bundesliga title this season.

"We wanted to win and it didn't work out," he said. "It can happen. They scored four goals and we two."

Robben had cancelled out Reus' opener before Van Buyten's own goal and Ilkay Guendogan's fine strike put Dortmund 3-1 up in the 57th minute.

The Bayern attacker struck again soon after but Reus sealed the result late on, and Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp described it as 'an amazing game'.

"At this stage of the pre-season with one week until the cup and two weeks until the Bundesliga, this was a hell of a match," Klopp told reporters.

"It was an amazing game. I think you could see that both teams really wanted to win. The winner is always happy and the loser does not care too much – this is the great thing about the Super Cup."
