Pre-Season Friendly: Tottenham 6 South China 0

27 July 2013 14:45

Jermain Defoe scored an explosive hat-trick as Tottenham sealed third place in the Asia Trophy with a 6-0 win over South China on Saturday.

The England international's haul helped his side to an emphatic victory over their opponents as they completed the tournament in commanding fashion after losing 3-1 to Sunderland in the semi-final.

Clint Dempsey and Andros Townsend were also on the scoresheet with the other goal coming courtesy of South China as the ball went in off Sean Tse in the 12th minute.

Andre Villas-Boas fielded a strong side for the encounter including a number of first-team regulars but Gareth Bale was once again the only notable absentee despite claims he could feature on the bench.

The 35-year-old also used the opportunity to showcase some of his young players with 21-year-old Tom Carroll making a second-half appearance and Townsend impressing as he looks to nail a first-team spot.

Spurs pressurised their opponents from the off and, despite South China goalkeeper Zhang Chunhui managing to block their early attempts, he did not fare so well when the ball fired off his own player.

An impressive backheel from Dempsey contributed to the goal as the subsequent cross from Danny Rose struck Tse and bounded off into the net leaving Chunhui stranded on his line.

The Premier League side kept the pressure up and saw a penalty shout turned down, while Dempsey missed a lob over the keeper but he soon managed to find the back of the net.

The American got on the end of a fine ball from Defoe to take his side 2-0 up before the England international got his first, slotting home after another mistake from South China.

The half-time break did not energise the losing side either, as Tottenham added a fourth to their tally just eight minutes after the re-start with Defoe once again available to tap past the keeper.

His hat-trick soon came as well as the 30-year-old ran round Chunhui and turned into an empty net before rain began to hammer down.

The misery was not over for South China though, as eight minutes before the conclusion Townsend smashed a free-kick from outside the box directly into the bottom corner.

South China had little chance against Townsend's effort but did squander their own opportunity to steal one back minutes before the end as Dhiego Martins' unchallenged shot went wide.
