Cahill backs Lukaku to shine at Chelsea

27 July 2013 04:50

Gary Cahill is confident young striker Romelu Lukaku is in for a successful season at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku, 20, has been in blistering form on Chelsea's tour of Asia, scoring four goals in three games and posing a constant threat in the final third.

After enjoying a productive loan spell at West Brom last season, Lukaku will be confident of forcing his way into Jose Mourinho's plans and Cahill believes there is no reason why he cannot be a permanent force in the English Premier League.

"He had a great loan spell at West Brom last season and has been flying in training and scored some great goals here," Cahill said.

"I play against him in training a lot and he's a handful just with his pace and power.

"He's still a young lad, but he scored a lot of goals at West Brom. So I'm sure it's exciting times for him and I'm sure he's looking forward to the season."

Cahill was also glowing in his assessment of triallist Bertrand Traore, who was only invited on tour after Mourinho watched footage of him he received from Chelsea's scouting team.

The 17-year-old has been a revelation this pre-season, scoring two goals including a memorable strike against an Indonesia All-Stars XI and Cahill says he has impressed the rest of the squad with his performances.

"Traore has come into the games and not looked out of place," Cahill said.

"He's been working well with the manager for two weeks and scored a fantastic goal in Indonesia.

"He's composed on the ball, has great confidence for such a young lad and has certainly done himself no harm in the two weeks we've been here."
