Hull City defender Liam Rosenior has underlined his desire to beat Ahmed Elmohamady to a first-team berth next term.
Egypt international Elmohamady was preferred as Steve Bruce's first-choice right wing-back last term, winning the club's Player of the Year award during a successful loan stint from Sunderland that has since been turned into a permanent move.
And, with Bruce having stuck with a 3-5-2 formation during his club's pre-season friendly commitments, Rosenior is eager to oust his 25-year-old team-mate from the starting XI.
"This is massive for me. I’ve not had a pre-season for four years and I know there’s more to come from me physically. I can be sharper and I can keep pushing on," he told The Hull Daily Mail.
"We look like we’re going to start with three at the back and I’ll be pushing for Elmo’s shirt. He obviously had a great season last year but I want it. If we move to a four-man defence then I’ll be ready then too."
Rosenior also expressed excitement at the prospect of Hull entering the new season with a fully-fit Sone Aluko, after the Nigeria international missed the latter half of the 2012-13 campaign with an Achilles injury.
"Sone was the best player in the Championship during the first half of last season," he added. "People can talk about (Wilfried) Zaha but I don’t think people could have been coming up to Hull to watch us because Sone was unbelievable.
"To have him fit for the Premier League will be great. I tell him every day in training that he’s the one I want to play against. The way his brain works and the way he moves, he’s a Premier League attacker no question."
The 28-year-old went on to insist that Hull's gruelling training schedule in pre-season will hold them in good stead in the Premier League.
"You only need to have been here to see how much hard work the lads have put in," he continued. "Physically it’s been the toughest pre-season I’ve ever had. That can only stand us in good stead.
"We know it’s going to be a tough season but if the fans had seen the amount of work we’ve put in, they’d be delighted. We’re extremely fit already and now we’ll try and add the sharpness to our game.
"These games aren’t just a fitness exercise, they’re a tactical and technical exercise during pre-season. Braga are a very good team, in the Champions League most years, so it was a good benchmark.
"We’ll be playing against a lot of technical sides next season and these games will prepare us well for Chelsea and Man City in the first month."
