CONCACAF Gold Cup Preview: USA, Honduras to fight for final spot

23 July 2013 18:58

The USA will hope to reach their fourth consecutive Gold Cup final when they face Honduras in Texas on Wednesday.

The host nation are unbeaten in the tournament and have reached each of the last four finals, losing the last two against Mexico, who face Panama in the other semi-final clash.

Honduras have also enjoyed good form of late and will be hungry for some silverware of their own, having not reached the final of the competition since it was launched in its current guise in 1991.

While Honduras managed an important clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Costa Rica on Monday, the hosts illustrated their goalscoring talent as they hammered El Salvador 5-1 to reach the last four.

Goals mark one of the biggest divisions between the sides in the Gold Cup so far, with the hosts firing home 12 more opportunities than their counterparts, and totting up 41 more shots.

The two sides do have history in the cup - it was the USA who Honduras lost to in the final 22 years ago, suffering penalty shoot-out heartbreak following a goalless draw.

Landon Donovan will be one of the main threats for Jurgen Klinsmann's charges, with five goals from his five appearances.

The 31-year-old striker spent nearly a year out of the national side but he has returned in style, matching the goals tally of forward partner Chris Wondolowski.

The in-form duo will come up against an experienced Honduran defence, with their probable back-line of Osman Chavez, Brayan Beckeles, Juan Carlos Garcia and Nery Medina totalling 111 years of age.

The winners will progress to the final in Chicago on July 28.
