Brian Kidd oversaw Manchester City's 2-1 defeat against AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Thursday.
With manager Manuel Pellegrini having cut his pre-season tour short to return to Chile for family reasons, Kidd was charged with improving on Sunday's 2-0 loss to SuperSport United.
It did not go according to plan as Carlington Nyadombo's late penalty secured the hosts a surprise victory after James Milner had cancelled Bongani Ndulula's early opener.
Yaya Toure went off injured in the opening match of the Nelson Mandela Football Invitiational tournament but made a welcome return to the starting line-up.
City created the first chance as Samir Nasri's dangerous free-kick forced an excellent save from Tapuwa Kapini after eight minutes.
But AmaZulu were not daunted by the task and soon took the lead, Ndulula pouncing on a poor back pass from Aleksandar Kolarov to roll the ball past Joe Hart with 19 minutes gone.
It took just six minutes for City to draw level, however, as Milner latched onto Toure's flicked header to turn home from close range.
Both sides made changes at the break and substitute Jack Rodwell almost put the visitors ahead within seven minutes of his introduction, collecting Edin Dzeko's precise pass before seeing his powerful effort beaten away by replacement goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe.
Dzeko had an opportunity of his own around the hour mark but Mathibe did superbly well to claw the Bosnian's side-footed shot over the bar.
And City were made to pay when Abdul Razak's foul afforded Nyadombo the opportunity to slot in the winner from the spot with two minutes remaining.
