Buck: Roman wants homegrown Chelsea stars

2 July 2013 10:52

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has a desire to make the club more reliant on bringing through young players, says chairman Bruce Buck.

Abramovich bought Chelsea a decade ago this week and has transformed the club’s fortunes by assembling team after team of big-money signings and by hiring a string of high-profile manages.

Silverware has followed on a regular basis, the highlight being the side’s 2012 UEFA Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich.

It is estimated that the Russian billionaire has spent over £700 million on players in the past 10 years, but Buck has hinted that Abramovich is keen on nurturing youngsters as opposed to relying on going out and buying the best talent around.

Paying tribute to Abramovich on the club’s official website, Buck said: "In 2003 he was a football fan that had seen some football and got enamoured with the game.

"Since then and very quickly he became an honest to goodness football expert.

"He has spent a lot of time watching players, watching games, talking to experts and he really does know a lot.

"He is certainly very interested in the young players. Almost every time he is at Cobham (Chelsea’s training complex) he watches and speaks to young players, and is really trying to build an institution here for the long term."

Jose Mourinho is back in charge of Chelsea for a second spell and Buck feels the return of 50-year-old, coupled with a desire for Abramovich to continue building the club into a dominant force in world football, marks the start of an exciting new era at Stamford Bridge.

He added: "As far as I am concerned, Mr Abramovich is concerned, the whole board and Jose Mourinho are concerned, it's onwards and upwards, continuing to move the club forward.

"That means more trophies, many more of our younger players coming through from the academy to the first team, doing more and better things for the community, and making our fans happy."

Abramovich has been repeatedly lauded by the club’s fans for the financial commitment he has shown to Chelsea.

Buck said: "He does it for the good of Chelsea Football Club and everybody associated with it, not so that the fans applaud him when he appears in his box on a matchday.

"It's not a vanity project."
