Genoa sack Delneri, re-hire Ballardini

21 January 2013 14:25

Genoa have sacked their second head coach of the season, with Luigi Delneri having been dumped following the club's 2-0 loss to Catania.

Delneri took over in October, replacing Luigi De Canio, who was sacked with Genoa on nine points from the opening eight games of the Serie A season.

But having won just two of 13 league matches during Delneri's tenure, Genoa, who are the Serie A relegation zone, have decided to end the former Juventus head coach's time at the club.

"The club wants to thank Delneri and his coaching staff for the job they did during this months," an official statement from Genoa read.

Delneri helped Genoa to just eight more points during his brief reign as head coach, leaving Italy's oldest existing football club in danger of dropping to Serie B.

Genoa have not played in Italy's second tier since the 2006/07 season and are three points adrift of 17th-placed Cagliari, who sit just outside the relegation zone, with 17 rounds left in this campaign.

Davide Ballardini, who coached Genoa from November 2010 until June 2011, has been appointed until the end of the season.
