San Lorenzo doubtful on Coloccini move

17 January 2013 14:29

San Lorenzo chairman Matias Lammens says they are relying on Fabricio Coloccini to force a move from Newcastle United to the Argentine club.

The Newcastle skipper's father revealed earlier this month that the defender has requested to be released from his contract in order to return to Argentina, with his wife reportedly ill.

And with manager Pardew determined to resolve what he has deemed a 'crisis' for the club, it appears the chances of a January exit for the 30-year-old are dwindling.

"San Lorenzo can't pay a fee for Coloccini. We don't want to build up fans hope, we are dependent on Fabricio's persistence to leave the club," Lammens said.

"San Lorenzo's position didn't change. We will see the contract we can make for him, according to club's economy. We would love having Fabricio amongst us but his exit from Newcastle won't be easy."

Lammens knows Newcastle will be reluctant sellers, with their captain having another solid season after leading them to their impressive sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last year.

Coloccini, who joined the Tyneside club for a fee of 10 million pounds in 2008, penned a new four-year contract last May and the chairman is sympathetic with the Premier League outfit's predicament.

"Putting myself in Newcastle's place, it will be difficult to let Fabricio Coloccini leave," he said.

"San Lorenzo will wait for him until the end of this week. If he can't solve this situation, we will go for another player so that he can join in with time before the Torneo Final stars.

"(Palermo defender) Mauro Cetto is priority for Juan Antonio Pizzi (San Lorenzo manager) and the player said he would like to come."
