Consistency the key for Roar

11 January 2013 03:49

Coach Mike Mulvey says consistency is the key for Brisbane Roar if they are to regain the kind of form which won them the past two A-League titles.

The Roar have won two and lost two under the stewardship of Mulvey, and currently sit seventh on the table.

They play Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night, and Mulvey says he wants his side to perform at their peak for the full 90 minutes.

"If you look at the performances; the second half of the Perth game was good, the first half not so good, the full 90 minutes against Adelaide was good, bits and pieces against Wellington was good and in actual fact a lot of last week was good at times, in terms of our possession, particularly in the first 20 minutes," Mulvey said after Friday morning's training session.

"What I've said to the players is that we want to get to a level of consistency where every week we're not trying to wonder are we going to have what we had against Adelaide or what we had against Melbourne Heart.

"So that's the challenge to the players, we need to put the 90 minutes in that we did against Adelaide and I'll be happy for sure."

Mulvey said there would be two changes to his Roar's starting XI from the side that went down 3-2 to Melbourne Heart last week.

James Donachie will return to central defence alongside Matt Smith, while Nick Fitzgerald will start on the left of midfield.

Fullback Ivan Franjic is likely to play against the Jets even though continuing problems with his left heel meant he was unable to train with the rest of the team this week.

Attacking midfielder Henrique remains out as he recovers from a hip injury.

A busy week for the club in the transfer market, in which Jade North and Julius Davies were brought in and Rocky Visconte was released, would not prove a distraction for players, Mulvey said, while promising an improvement on last match.

"In football there's always speculation, there's comings and goings, but we're professional people, coaches and players, and you have to have the ability to control distractions so I've got no concerns there," he said.

"In any team in the world you find that there are one or two players brought in to give the place a bit of a boost and also add to the quality.

"I've got no qualms, there's no hangover from last week. You'll see a better performance tomorrow night."
