Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid submit Olympic 2020 bids

7 January 2013 19:02

The three cities in contention for the hosting rights of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics have submitted their bid books.

Representatives from the bids of Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid handed over their books - which contain hundreds of pages detailing areas such as budgets and venues - to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday.

The documents will become public on Tuesday but will be initially assessed by the IOC's evaluation commission, who will then visit all three cities in March.

The evaluation commission will then publish a report for members of the IOC in June.

Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid were chosen as the three cities remaining in the race after a 15-member IOC executive board decided that the 32nd edition of the Summer Olympics would not be held in Doha, Qatar or Baku, Azerbaijan while Rome, Italy pulled out of the running.

Tokyo have previously hosted the Olympic Games, in 1964, while Istanbul and Madrid have never hosted a Summer Olympics.
