Cazorla earns Wenger praise

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was relieved his team overcame their 'nerves' to beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Saturday.

A brace from Santi Cazorla helped Arsenal to the much-needed win in the English Premier League, seeing them bounce back from losses to Blackburn and Bayern Munich.

Wenger believes his side were on a good run in the league before they crashed out of the FA Cup and surrendered three away goals to Bayern.

The Frenchman was pleased with the win at Emirates Stadium as Arsenal moved to within a point of fourth-placed Tottenham, who face West Ham on Monday.

"We are on a good run in the premiership and we have been affected by the major disappointments we have had, you can see that in the nerves," Wenger told Sky Sports.

"We could have scored many, many more goals today, but we got the three points and that's what counts."

Wenger praised Cazorla for his contribution and urged fans to get behind his team, who he believes showed character.

"Yes, he (Cazorla) got us two very important goals and I'm very happy with the team attitude and team performance," he said.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert felt his team deserved at least a point from the clash as they slumped back into the drop zone.

Andreas Weimann equalised for Villa before Cazorla's second and with Wigan beating Reading, Lambert's side are 18th on goal difference.

"The team were excellent against Arsenal. I don't think we deserved to get beat," Lambert said.

"We looked a threat throughout the whole game. In the first half we should have scored. But the way the lads played, I couldn't fault them.

"I thought they were excellent throughout. I felt we should have scored more than one goal. And I thought we should have been in front at half-time. I thought we were unlucky to be down.

"But we came out in the second half and went again – and got the equaliser. The equaliser was a brilliant finish, from a fantastic counter-attack.

"I then thought the one when Christian (Benteke) went through, he maybe should have slipped Andi (Weimann) in. A bit more care and we maybe would have got another one.

"But we certainly didn't deserve to lose the game."
