Wenger braced for ´impossible´ second leg

20 February 2013 01:49

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal must "make the impossible possible" if they are to overcome Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Arsenal went down 3-1 at home to the Bundesliga leaders in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie on Tuesday, but Wenger insisted his side have not given up on progressing to the quarter-finals.

He told Sky Sports: "Let's not hide the truth, it will be very difficult, but we will try to make the impossible possible.

"We will have to go there and play completely like we play at home and try to change the score. The third goal makes it very difficult but we have to try.

"Our fans were fantastic tonight and I'm very disappointed that we couldn't give them the win they wanted.

"It was of course not the best of preparation mentally because the environment of the team was very difficult before the game tonight, but the players battled very hard, gave absolutely everything."

Bayern raced into a two-goal lead through Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller, before Lukas Podolski pulled one back for the hosts early in the second half.

But Mario Mandzukic bundled home a third goal with 13 minutes remaining and Wenger believes the Croatian's strike was a painful one for his team to concede.

"I believe the 3-1, the third goal, was a mental blow for the team because we gave a lot to (try and) come back to 2-2, but at that level it's difficult if you're 2-0 down," he said.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes could not hide his delight at the comprehensive nature of the visitors' win at the Emirates Stadium.

"It was just easy for my team to play," Heynckes told reporters in his post-match press conference.

"We are currently in astonishing form. Our quality is that we can punish even the smallest mistakes of our opponents."
