Pasfield pens extension with Mariners

6 February 2013 07:08

Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Justin Pasfield has signed a one-year contract extension with the Gosford club.

As the A-League's transfer window nears its close, Graham Arnold has looked to sew up his squad, with second-string keeper Pasfield earning a spot despite playing just eight times in the past two seasons.

The former North Queensland Fury shot-stopper said he is still enjoying his time deputising for Australia international Mat Ryan.

"I've been here for the past two seasons and it's exciting times," the 27-year-old Pasfield said.

"I set myself a goal when I came here to try and establish myself as the number one but obviously Maty is doing fantastic. I am excited to be here for another season."

Arnold heaped praise on his second keeper, admitting he was keeping Pasfield as a solid back-up in case Ryan was unavailable.

"He's been great in the two years that we've had him here," Arnold said.

"In the games he's played he's shown that he can be a first team 'keeper and I always like the luxury of having two first-team keepers."

Meanwhile, James Oates - a 21-year-old defender - agreed to be released from the Mariners, cutting short his one-season deal with the Premiers Plate holders.

Oates injured his ankle prior to this A-League season, and is expected to look for a club in New South Wales' Premier League.
