Bundesliga wrap: Bayern stretch lead to 14

2 February 2013 20:01

Bayern Munich moved 14 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-0 win at Mainz on Saturday.

With the second-placed Bayer Leverkusen not in action until Sunday, Jupp Heynckes' side took advantage with a convincing win at the Coface Arena.

Mainz, who sit fifth on the table, started brightly but conceding just before half-time proved costly for the hosts.

Thomas Mueller was the scorer, converting Toni Kroos' assist on 41 minutes to give Bayern the perfect boost heading into the break.

And Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic made sure of the win with a brace in the early stages of the second half.

Mandzukic has now netted five goals in his past three matches, form that has seen him climb to the top of the Bundesliga's scoring charts with 14 goals.

Bottom-placed Greuther Furth claimed a shock 2-1 win at Schalke in front of more than 60,000 fans in Gelsenkirchen.

Playing his first game for the club since crossing from French club Lyon on loan, Brazilian midfielder Michel Bastos fired Schalke into the lead after 47 minutes.

But Felix Klaus equalised five minutes later for the visitors and that set up a nervy finish.

Greuther Furth – who had only won one other match in the Bundesliga this season – won all three points in the 92nd minute when Serbian Nikola Durdic bagged his first goal for his new club.

Other results saw the struggling Hoffenheim come from behind to defeat Freiburg 2-1.

Trailing after Max Kruse scored four minutes in for Freiburg, Hoffenheim hit back thanks to a double from striker Kevin Volland.

Australian Robbie Kruse also scored twice as Fortuna Dusseldorf beat Stuttgart 3-1, Wolfsburg and Augsburg played out a 1-1 draw, while Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Hamburg 2-0 on the road.
