Roma can catch Juventus, De Rossi insists

15 December 2013 12:29

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi believes the side can still overhaul Serie A leaders Juventus.

Rudi Garcia's outfit are undefeated in Italy's top flight this season with 11 wins and four draws, a return that leaves Roma three points adrift of reigning champions Juve.

Antonio Conte's men have only dropped points on two occasions this term, and have won seven consecutive league matches without conceding a goal since losing 4-2 to Fiorentina in October.

Roma's progress was hindered by four consecutive draws, but the Rome outfit halted that run with a 2-1 triumph over Fiorentina last weekend.

And ahead of the club's visit to San Siro to face underachieving Milan on Monday, De Rossi insists the side are looking at catching Juventus and not over their shoulders at the chasing pack.

"I have never believed those who said our objective was to get back into Europe, as we always knew it was to target a Champions League spot," he told Roma Channel.

"If Juventus played Napoli today, I'd cheer Napoli as I don't look at who is behind us when Juve are only three points away. We want to catch Juventus.

"Our positive streak isn't over, it has just gone on pause due to a series of factors including opposition goalkeepers having the performance of their lives and refereeing decisions going against us while other teams were more fortunate in that respect.

"These things even themselves out over the course of a campaign."

De Rossi also spoke about the Milan fixture, and insisted it will be a tough match despite Massimiliano Allegri's side winning on just four occasions in the league this season.

He added: "A few years ago Milan were steamrollering everyone, but this is a different team.

"I wouldn't say we are fortunate to be facing them now, as it is a difficult game and much tougher than it would've been a month ago."
