League Two Preview: Oxford host Rochdale, Southend visit Wycombe

29 August 2013 14:45

League Two leaders Oxford United will hope to get back to winning ways when they welcome Rochdale to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

Chris Wilder's men saw their 100 per cent start to the new campaign end at home to Wycombe Wanderers last time out, and needed an injury-time equaliser from Johnny Mullins to rescue a point after Dean Morgan's double for the visitors.

Their opponents Rochdale have now gone three games without a victory, after defeating Hartlepool United 3-0 on the opening day, and were beaten 1-0 at Plymouth Argyle last Saturday.

Southend United were the only other team with three wins from three games under their belt before last week, but they came undone at unbeaten Chesterfield.

Armand Gnanduillet came off the bench to net an injury-time winner to give the home side a 2-1 victory over Phil Brown's men, but the former Hull City boss is confident his side will bounce back when they visit Wycombe.

"I know my players and the will respond next weekend," he told the club's official website.

"We don't want to have that feeling of losing, especially in the final minute, very often so we're now fully focused on getting back to winning ways next weekend."

That result lifted Chesterfield to joint top of the table and they travel to Portsmouth next, where they will have to be wary of the threat posed by League Two's top scorer, veteran striker David Connolly.

The former Republic of Ireland international has hit four goals in four league games for Guy Whittingham’s side this season, including one in their 2-2 draw at Mansfield last time out.

Meanwhile, third-placed Fleetwood Town will look to continue putting the pressure on Oxford and Chesterfield when they visit AFC Wimbledon, while bottom club Accrington Stanley - who have just one point from four games and lost 2-0 against Cardiff City in the League Cup in midweek - face a tough home meeting with promotion contenders Burton Albion.

Newly promoted Newport County head to Scunthorpe United - who were relegated from League One last term - and Exeter City will look to respond after their 2-0 loss at Morecambe when they host York City.

That result represented Morecambe’s first win of the season and Jim Bentley will hope his side can build on that, coupled with a spirited display during their League Cup defeat against Newcastle United on Wednesday, when they welcome Plymouth to the Globe Arena.

Field Mill will play host to a mid-table clash when Mansfield Town meet Dagenham and Redbridge, while struggling Hartlepool travel south to face Torquay United.

Elsewhere, Bury - who are unbeaten in two after losing both of their opening games - play Cheltenham Town, and Bristol Rovers, fresh off the back of a 3-2 win over York, welcome Northampton Town to the Memorial Ground.
